Day 3: Chemistry & rainbow of cups

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

Perth, MArch 25 2020

Today we played chemistry with blue carrots (red cabbage would do the same work) & household items. We obtained a rainbow of cups! This is my favourite chemistry experiment, and I even wrote a story about it. Let's see how it works, but first let's have a look at this pretty picture <3

We boiled some slices of blue carrots in water and as the water got blue, we learnt about extraction of pigments. We distributed the liquid in cups and added vinegar, lemon juice, bicarbonate, dishwashing powder, dishwashing soap, vitamin C, milk, hand soap, sugar, salt and appreciated colour change in most cases. We had fun adding stuff to turn the colours back and forward.

You can use this experiment to introduce older children to pH, but I did not stress this too much because my daughter is only 3 years old and the girl she just wants to have fu-un.

We put lots of vinegar in blue water containing lots of bicarbonate. We appreciated the explosive chemistry and wanted to repeat it several times.

Learning outcomes:

chemical reactions

pH/acids/bases

careful with quantities

things that look OK may look a lot different if you mix them up

Materials: see pictures and text above

This can be easily readapted for older children, I run this in primary schools - there are lots of suggestions on the web suggesting how to linking this activity to pH and chemical reactions, or just contact me if you need help.

Health & Safety Carefully supervise your kid with things harmful to eat or handle. If In doubt, just use edible items.
