Day #2 of COVID isolation, part 2: English vs Italian vowel sounds

June 15, 2022

Today Dad started his own spin-off ofThe House of Fun. He already did some House of Fun's style stuff in the past, but it's all undocumented. Now it's time to come out.

We are growing up our kids bilingual and we have a huge problem. Vowels.

A in italian sounds like I in English.

E in italian sounds like A in English.

I is pronounced exactly like E in English.

O and U are similar between English and Italian. Thank goodness.

There's no Y in italian but when we say it, we say IPSILON. That's very friendly.

So when we are spelling out words, and in two languages, it's very confusing. Therefore my husband and daughter looked for words that are similar in Italian and English and start with the same vowel (like e.g. Elephant/Elefante). When we spell out words to our children, when it comes to vowels, we don't say the vowel but the name that start with that vowel in English or Italian, depending on what language they are writing.

E.g. Apple becomes

Animal

P

P

L

Elephant

Today, my husband and daughter have officially documented our vowel reference in a very clear, creative and useful way.

Enjoy!
