Day 22 of #covid19 #socialdistance
Today it was a special day again; however we decided to have our usual activity time because it really gives a structure to our day and help the entire family to keep up with our new routine despite this challenging time.
We learnt about magnetism through crafting a magnet for our fridge with a bee.
We used one of those big magnets with a calendar on top, one of those that real estate agents put in your mailbox. I never throw them away, never use them, now I found how to make a good use of them.
We cut it in a half (because it was too big) and looked on a junk paper for a nice landscape to stick as a background. We cut a flower from a piece of fabric (from an old shopping bag that got broken) and an oval from a yellow piece of paper. We stuck both on the background. The stripes come from a black piece of paper, wing from a transparent sleeve with a piece of cyan paper stuck under it.
Done!
After then we put it on the fridge. It didn't fall "because it's a magnet!" said my daughter. So we collected a few magnets that we have and started testing as many different surfaces as we could, to learn that metal surfaces generally keep the magnets stuck with few exceptions.
We then used a wooden+magnet train (e.g. the one you find at IKEA) to experience different polarities: at one side the magnets adhere and at the other side they repel each other. The latter was quite fascinating to watch.
Learning outcomes:
different materials behave differently
magnets
fine motor skills with crafting
Materials: as in picture plus glue and scissors.
