Day 25 of #covid19 #socialdistance
Today we were inspired by this blog and decided to build our own coral reef from egg cartons and a few other recycled materials we had around the house.
We had lots of fun painting the egg cartons, finding stuff around the house that may suit our purpose and we also made a turtle from a bottle lid and drew fish that we cut and used to populate our reefs.
We learnt a bit of what is a coral reef, about animals that build their shells the same way we build our bones, and for similar purposes: protection and structure (that goes under the name of biomineralization, e.g. living beings that form minerals).
We had a look at how the little coral polyps look like in this fantastic comic book shown in the picture, that is too much to read for a 3 year old but contains a lot of accurate pictures (and may suit you if you have older children).
We also decided to build a coral reef with our building blocks...
We decided to end our day watching "Finding Nemo". However, as most Disney animated movies, it's for older children - as my daughter pointed out when the naughty shark came into action, and she asked for Peppa Pig (there is an episode where they visit Australia and go to the coral reefs).
Again, if you have older children, that may just be the right movie to end your day exploring coral reefs.
Learning outcomes:
coral reefs
marine life
sustainability
Materials: egg cartons, cartons of other kinds, cotton balls, colourful plastic/paper wastes, colour, glue, toothsticks, tape, lids from milk bottles... use your imagination :)
