Day 30 of #covid19 #socialdistance
Today we had fun learning some new mathematics skills through exploring symmetry. I drew some symmetric objects as shown in pictures, some just to colour in, some to complete and some to completed with dots shown.
While colouring, we talked of how these objects looked the same from both sides, but mirrored. We then thought of things that were symmetric and realised.. our body is! So we drew hands and feet and coloured them in, with colours distributed as symmetric as possible.
An idea here - something we did a while ago - is to draw hands, cut them out and hang them at the door, so that we can hi-five when someone leaves and someone at stays home: one outside, and one inside.
We then used building blocks and lids to create symmetric patterns (there's a small mistake in the one shown here... ooops).
At 3 yo, I would not push this further, mirroring is enough. But for older children perhaps rotations and translations and more complex symmetries can be introduced.
Learning outcomes:
symmetry & patterns
Materials: colours, a ruler, paper
