Day 35: Covid19 & our first comic strip

Perth, April 26 2020

Today we realised our first comic strip, about Covid19 virus. Wile drawing and colouring in, we learnt how the virus is made, and why washing hands with soap is so important.

Soap basically destroys the virus membrane and so the virus dies (it's a bit like if we had to leave without our skin, except the virus' inside is a lot more liquid then ours).

We imagined how that could happen, and we came up with soap holding a sword and bubbles eating the virus' membrane. So we told the story with sequences of pictures. We also understood more clearly why washing hands with soap is so important.

Before realising the artwork, we watched this gif:

We highlighted the main components: proteins, lipids (grease) and RNA (what makes the virus being so bad).

The science (chemistry, my favourite) behind soap destroying the virus' membrane is explained in many basic textbooks, and it's the same as the science behind soap cleaning grease. With a 3 yo I didn't get into these details. Here a good link:

Learning outcomes:

hand hygiene

basic chemistry

storytelling with pictures

shape awareness

Materials: paper & colours
