Day 39: Phase transitions in the Kitchen

Perth, April 30 2020

Today we observed phase transitions in the kitchen.

We had fun putting the coconut oil jar and a cup with two pieces of chocolate in different locations: in a warm water bath, in the fridge, outside in the sun, indoor.

We also noticed the warm "smoke" that comes out of a cup with boiling water in it (H&S - careful not to get burnt!).

We put ice in cold water and ice in warm water and noticed how quickly it melts if the water is warm.

We learnt there are solids, liquids and gases, and that you can pass from one to another by adding or subtracting heat.

We had good fun.

After then, we decided to draw all the moments in these days where we are learning something using characters from Peppa Pig: playing chemistry, reading, playing building blocks, cooking, drawing.

Learning outcomes:

phase transitions/states of the matter

Materials: coconut oil, chocolate, warm water, boiling water (H&S - careful), ice, butter, cups.
