Day 52 of #covid19 #socialdistance
Today we learnt about leaves.
We went out in our front and back yard and looked for different leaves. We spent a good half an hour wandering around and
we made sure to pick leaves gently.
Basil, rosemary, chives, mint, tomato, carrots, parsely, peas, fern, roses, the leaves from the tree in front of the house, some random leaves from weeds, mallow, frangipani.
We put them on a carton tray and observed them very well.
We used a pretend magnifying glass - as we do not have one, and a torch.
Some smells, that's why we call them aromatic.
Some don't.
They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Some are leaves made of leaves made of leaves - like those from the fern.
They come in various shades of green.
Some are more rough, others are smooth. Some are thick and some are thin.
Some are dried, some are still fresh.
All of them have a stem and veins, and the blade of the rose leave is a bit prickly - my daughter says it's like the Gruffalo's back!
After then, we made some drawings and decorated them with the leaves we had. In particular, we tried to draw the plants corresponding to a particular leave.
Learning outcomes:
structure of leaves
association of each leave with specific plant
Materials: leaves, colours, magnifying glass
