Day 36 of #Covid19 #socialdistance.
Today we played chemistry with bicarbonate and coloured vinegar, using food colours and the experiment worked - not like in Day 19, when we used colours that reacted with vinegar.
We made beautiful and colourful artworks by dropping drops of coloured vinegar on a layer of bicarbonate, as shown in pictures. And enjoying the fizzy chemical reaction developing carbon dioxide. Fzzzzzzzzz.
We had 3 trays of bicarbonate. We did not have any yellow, it's been gone from our local supermarket for weeks (no idea why). We also found out that it takes a lot of liquid to react with bicarbonate.
We did the green island in the blue sea by dropping green colour in the blue.
Once finished playing chemical reactions, we used the coloured squishy solid and liquid mixture to paint on cartons with our hands. It was really fun.
We painted a marmaid, the rainbow crystal cave with a flower in the sun, the rainbow crystal cave with a cherry three and a flower with the sun. We noticed, once dried off they tend to get very white. This is because all what's dissolved in the liquid crystallises as the liquid evaporates.
We are thinking whether there's anything we can do with the dry coloured sandy solid that we have left.
Learning outcomes:
chemical reactions
touch and feel experience
Materials: sodium bicarbonate, white vinegar, food dyes, something to drop the vinegar in, trays, cartons.
