Day 48: Dancing milk

Perth, May 9 2020

Today we did a very popular experiment. We had good fun, though it is probably more suitable to older children.

We used the materials as in picture. In two dishes we poured full cream and hilo milk. We put drops of food dyes. Put 3 different kinds of soap on Q-tips and put them into milk.

We could notice all the colours messing around. We did not notice any big difference between the full cream and the hilo, despite the full cream milk should give a more enhanced effect.

We did notice that the dish soap was messing the colours more than the hand soap, and that the baby soap had a very limited effect.

We talked a bit about soap and fats binding (like the soap eating to the grease on the virus! Day 35) and causing all the colours dancing. But obviously, a 3 yo is more interested in the visual part of the experiment rather than the detailed explanation. So I didn't push any more chemistry through.

The experiment and its meaning is explained very well here: https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/milk-color-explosion/

Learning outcomes:

For older children: fats and surfactants substances; brownian motion.

For a 3yo is just observing some science in the kitchen.

Materials: as in picture.
